These vintage purple and white colour block baskets are ethically produced in three handy sizes, woven from indigenous sisal grass in rural Kenya. Use your woven storage basket for keeping your hair accessories and toiletries organized, or fill with children’s toys, remote controls and gloves and hats. These round sisal baskets also make beautiful woven planters for your houseplants – and wonderful new home gifts. Wherever and however you choose to use your new woven basket it is sure to bring a splash of vibrant Kenyan colour and rich texture to your home.

The Basket Room is proud to partner with weaving groups in several rural corners of Africa, and the women in this particular group are simply brilliant at producing an array of gorgeous colours through meticulous hand dyeing. These women have woven from a young age: the age-old craft of basket weaving is passed along the female line and is being kept alive for future generations thanks to your purchases.

Basket weaving within a group empowers women to support their families with a flexible income in the dry seasons, where subsistence farming becomes unsustainable.

FAIR TRADE & HANDMADE IN KENYA

About the designer…

The Basket Room creates beautiful collections of handwoven, decorative storage baskets for the home. Woven with stunning colours & unique patterns, we work with small craft collectives in Africa to bring you ethical, stylish accessories with a story. They bring together all the values of fair trade, partnering with cooperatives in Africa that helps women to support their families more comfortably, since subsistence farming alone often fails to meet the family’s needs, particularly in the dry season. By purchasing one of these baskets you actively support these weavers’ livelihoods, and a commitment to empowering women in developing countries.
